What we fund

Research and Travel

– up to a maximum of £1000

These awards are available to assist faculty and doctoral students pursuing Canadianist research in a UK university. Qualifying candidates need to make a research visit to Canada, lasting a minimum of one week. Applicants need not be British citizens, but to be eligible, faculty applicants must be contracted, UK-salaried members of the academic staff of a UK university, and doctoral applicants must be registered postgraduate students at a UK university.

Conference Support

– up to a maximum of £1500

This programme provides small supplementary awards (maximum £1500) for conferences that either concentrate directly and specifically on Canadian themes and issues or that examine such themes and issues in a comparative and contrastive perspective with the UK and/or the EU. Please note that in the latter case, there must be a significant proportion of Canadian content (at least one-third of the conference time and focus). It is anticipated that an award will normally be made in respect of particular discrete items such as the travel and subsistence expenses of a plenary speaker from Canada, support for postgraduate participants, etc

PhD Studentship

– up to a maximum of £2,000

These studentships are available for well-qualified applicants to conduct doctoral research containing a substantial Canadian element at a UK university. Valued at £2,000 per annum for full-time students, or pro-rata per semester or per term for part-time students, they are intended to assist students in payment of home tuition fees. These grants may be renewed up to a maximum period of three years full-time or equivalent period part-time. For each year of receipt of an award, host institutions must provide ‘matching funding’ at a level which at least makes up the balance of the full-time home student tuition fees for the year (or a pro rata portion for a shorter period in the case of a part-time student). Any PhD degree-granting institution in the UK may apply for a studentship, provided appropriate Canadianist supervision and appropriate Canadianist resources are available to support the student’s research.

Seed Funding

– up to a maximum of £2,000

The Foundation may occasionally make small early-stage grants to help organisations grow and flourish in their efforts to promote Canada and Canadian cultures and values in the UK. With grants of up to £2,000, seed money can be used to support innovative programming, including groundbreaking cultural works. Our seed funding is designed to foster a greater profile and sustainability for both the supported organisation and the Foundation.
