A two-day seminar on Decolonizing Teacher Education : Re-thinking the Educational
Relationship was jointly organised by the University of Regina and the University of Exeter
and took place in Exeter on March 10 th – 11 th 2017.
The seminar attracted 59 academic and non-academic delegates from 6 countries. Associate
Professor Vanessa Andreotti from UBC gave an opening address which encouraged delegates
to consider how it might be possible to meet the political and existential challenges of
decolonizing teacher education, while Professor George Sefa Dei from OISIE gave a plenary
talk focusing on the implications for literacy education.
The Universities of Regina and Exeter also collaborated to conduct some pilot research on
the seminar. A research report will be available in October 2017. The two universities are
now developing the application for funding for a major international and interdisciplinary
research project that will be submitted to the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council.
