The Stirling University Social Work Study Trip to Calgary was a hugely valuable cultural and social endeavour. I learned about social work practice in a city that is proud of its diversity and friendly demeanour. Perhaps the most illustrative of my learning was that related to the rich indigenous culture that I found to be thriving in Alberta’s most populous city. The Social Work Academics at Mount Royal and Calgary Universities clearly have a passion for Social Work Practice in Canada and imbued in me a sense of professional identity with an approach to social justice that reflects the historical and social priorities for Canadian citizens. The highlight of the Study Trip for me was learning more about the extent of the indigenous influence of cultural heritage on wider Canadian society particularly this year of the 150th anniversary of Canada. I learned that Scottish and Canadian Social Work practice have far more in common than divides us.
