Thanks to the Canada – UK Foundation’s grant the Screening Rights Film Festival, the third annual international festival of Social Justice Films in Birmingham UK, took place 26 – 29 October 2017 at the Midlands Art Centre. The festival is based upon research taking part within the Centre for American and Canadian Studies and B-Film: Centre for Film Studies at University of Birmingham. One of its aims is to extend debate on a variety of social justice issues and build new and diverse audiences for social justice films. Included in the line up was the Canadian film, Black Code (2016) directed by Nicholas de Pencier, and focused on the Toronto-based Citizen Lab’s Ron Deibert, it offered a powerful insight into questions of international security, surveillance and activism in the digital age.

The post-screening discussion, brought together experts in the field related to the film’s topic, from the UK, together with the film’s director de Pencier.
